Before I Fall

by Lauren Oliver

Synopsis
Sam, popular high-schooler, dies in a car accident. Then she wakes up and has to live the day she dies over and over again.

Review
I picked this book out of our stack of Advance Reading Copies with the intention of reading it closer to the release date. I hate to say that a blurb is what made me take it, but in this case the Jay Asher quote was enough for me. I got home and read the back and a wonderful review I found, and decided just to go ahead and read it. I started grad school a few weeks before and had plenty of productive things to do, but I literally could not put this book down. Seriously folks.

Sam is the best kind of character, pretty loathsome at the beginning but ever-changing as the story progresses.  Some of the days, Sam does exactly what you picture a high schooler doing. Even better, she is ballsy and proactive, unlike so many female protags in YA these days.
I talked with a friend and she agreed that it was a page turner, but only "liked it".  I had to disagree, the more I kept thinking about this book, the more things I liked about it.  I loved it.  Though I might have laughed more if she was played by Bill Murray and there was a groundhog...

I have to wait till next year to count this, but I'm pretty sure this will be on my list of top 10 books of 2010...

Snogging - an 8 on the scale
Story - 4/4 a-mazing
Character - 4/4 smart and dynamic

The Treasure Map of Boys

E. Lockhart
The Third Ruby Oliver Novel

Synopsis
Ruby's musings continue, following up The Boyfriend List and The Boy Book. She continues to see Dr. Z, her psychiatrist, about her social hang-ups and panic attacks.

Review
I really like these books. The third installment is just as good, if not better, than the other ones. I love Ruby as a main character. Her voice is so honest, her thoughts are so spot on - I actually believe that she is a real (and not fictional) teenager (Maybe I should be seeing Dr. Z). Kudos to E. Lockhart for writing such a well written teen. The footnotes are amazing. Should I insert a pun about how this book is a treasure, probably not.

Humor - 3/4 quite funny
Snogging - a 6 on the scale
Story/Characters - 4/4
Pace - 4/4 I read this in a day
Overall Score - 4/5 Excellent!
